Look around.  We're more and more seeing people using their phones in the silliest situations...even at the gas pumps as they're pumping gas.  We find ourselves asking questions like "Can't the call wait?"  "What did you do before cell phones?"

How often have you seen the warning that you see posted here?  Probably not often, because who really pays attention to the stickers that are generally on the side of the gas pumps?  We're more concerned about the price of gas.  That's what we're looking at, am I right?

But why do we still see this warning?  Wasn't it pretty much debunked cell phones can't generate sparks that can ignite gas pumps?  According to the FCC, companies have done extensive research to determine if the phones are guilty of setting off a charge that could be responsible for starting fires at gas pumps.  Scientific testing has determined that there is no proof that there is a dangerous link between cell phones and fuel vapors.

So why are these warnings posted on the pumps?  Mostly because the gas station needs to put out a disclaimer for liability reasons.  Although there appears to be no link to fires from cell phone use, if there is even the most remote chance that there could be, the gas company does not want to be responsible.  See more information about using cell phones at the gas pump here.

Either way, I never use my cell phone at the pumps.  Why would I need to?  I see people doing this all the time and I really don't understand why they feel this is the best time to talk on the phone.  Wait until you are back on the go....but don't forget to use a hands free option while driving.  We'll save that story for another time.  Happy travels!
