A car fire shutdown a portion of Route 49 in the Town of Floyd on Friday morning.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office says 58-year old David Abell of Yorkville was traveling west on 49 when the engine of his vehicle began to smoke.

They say Abell pulled over onto the shoulder of the road and the engine compartment then burst into flames.  Abell and his passenger were able to get out of the vehicle safely and call 9-1-1.

The westbound lane was shut down to traffic for about 30 minutes while the Floyd Fire Department battled the fire.
