Each year, more than 20,000 people attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, but only 67% reach the top.

Today, Vietnam Veteran and Boonville resident Paul Fortin will become part of the 67% as he treks nine hours to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, 19,300 feet above sea level.

For every 1,000 feet he climbs, Fortin is asking for a one-dollar donation to his team, Boonville VFW Post 5538.

They'll be taking part in Sitrin Healthcare's Stars and Stripes Run and Walk in September.

It's the primary fundraiser for Sitrin's Military Rehabilitation Program.

UPDATED 2/16, 1:40 pm.- After a cold night camping at 18,500 feet above sea level, Fortin and his group rose early to watch the sunrise from the top of Mount Kilimanjaro before beginning a long, four-hour hike down a  steep, rigorous route.

Tonight will be their last night on Kilimanjaro and they will celebrate their accomplishment by feasting on a traditional African cuisine.
