In news that should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone who knows anything about either of the two men in question, U2 frontman Bono has come out against the candidacy of Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump.

Bono made his feelings known during a recent appearance on CBS This Morning, telling host Charlie Rose — as seen in the video above — that he loathes Trump's ideas as much as he loves American ideals, and he fears a Trump presidency could be fatal for the nation as we know it.

"America is like the best idea the world ever came up with," said Bono. "But Donald Trump is potentially the worst idea that ever happened to America. Potentially. Could destroy it."

At the crux of Bono's anti-Trump argument lies what he sees as a fundamental disconnect in Trump's interpretation of a core Constitutional tenet. "America’s not just a country. Ireland is a nice country. Great Britain is a great country — all the rest of it. It’s not an idea. America is an idea, and that idea is bound up in justice and equality for all — equality and justice for all, you know," he added. "I think he’s hijacked the party. I think he’s trying to hijack the idea of America. And I think it’s bigger than all of us. I think ... this is really dangerous."

That being said, Bono also pointed out that he understands, to an extent, why voters might feel drawn to Trump's political rhetoric. "I would not diminish Trump supporters or underestimate their angst," he explained. "Because I feel that in a way, they have correctly assessed that the center parties haven’t yet become clear. ... I’m Irish. I don’t have a vote. And I can’t be telling people how to vote and don’t want to, but I have a voice, and I can say that who sits in that office really affects everyone in this world."
