It's been a while since Billy Joel gave his fans any really big news to look forward to, but it looks like he might have something major up his sleeve for 2014.

Rolling Stone reports that Joel has scheduled a press conference for Dec. 3 at Madison Square Garden, during which he will make an unspecified "exclusive and historic announcement." As the report notes, Joel has already lined up a series of shows at the Garden for next year, which are set to take place on Jan. 27, Feb. 3, March 21 and April 18.

Of course, the only announcement Joel fans have really been waiting for is the one saying he's ready to get off his duff and make a new studio album for the first time since 1993, but he's never given any indication that he's ever regretted his decision to give up recording, so that seems unlikely. Far more likely, according to Rolling Stone, is an announcement of some kind of special concert series.

The report speculates that Joel could be planning a succession of monthly shows at Madison Square Garden throughout 2014 -- and since he's recorded a dozen studio albums, he could conceivably perform one in its entirety at each concert. It's an interesting idea, and one that would give him a new way of shaking of a set list that's remained relatively steady for 20 years, but we'll have to wait until Dec. 3 to find out for sure.
