Beach Boys To Reunite For 2012 Grammy Ceremony?

Looks like it could be the Beach Boys, not Van Halen, who are going to make big news by reuniting at the Grammy Awards this year. Rumors were flying at breakneck pace around the music business that Van Halen were to make some major announcement at the nominations telecast. That didn’t happen, and it may turn out it was a different iconic California band who appears at the actual ceremony.

Once (and future?) Beach Boys guitarist Al Jardine told Rolling Stone, “I thought the Grammys might make the announcement. I don’t know what happened. There will be a surprise at the Grammys. We’ll do something really exciting.  It’s going to be a very big operation.”  The word is that the ’60s legends, who celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first album next year, will reunite for the Grammy 2012 broadcast. Well, reunite is a relative term here since both Carl and Dennis Wilson are long dead, but, plans for Jardine to join up with Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston are apparently rolling along.

According to Jardine, The Beach Boys have booked time in the recording studio, saying he and his old bandmates appear to have put their past differences behind them. “That stuff doesn’t permeate the atmosphere. When you’re in the presence of greatness, you don’t wallow in that crap.”

Earlier this year, Mike Love told Beach Boys fanzine Endless Summer Quarterly, “We had a session at Capitol Records. Brian was conducting the session. At the end of the session Brian said, “I can’t believe a 70-year-old guy can sing that great!” It was cool. There’s a lot of talk and conjecture both internally and externally. All I can say at the moment is I think it would be great to work with Brian and see what can come of it.”

At this point it must be said, Wilson doesn’t seem to be on the same page as Love or Jardine. In a recent interview with Q magazine, Wilson said “There’s been talk that I was going to join the Mike Love group but it’s not true.”
