Ugh.  I’m seeing more and more of this every day.  People get a new puppy or kitten for Christmas, and then quickly find that either they didn’t realize how much work it is to train a pet, or how difficult it is to train a puppy when there is 4 feet of snow on the ground.

After folks realize they have bitten off more than they can chew, they look to online listings for rehoming solutions.  Sounds like a great idea, right?

Please consider the dangers for the animal when you are thinking about finding a new home on Craigslist or Facebook.  Consider this example…

A dog name Jack was put on Craigslist hoping to find him a loving home.

His owner thought she did enough research on the new owner, and even got updates from her after Jack was taken in.

Just days ago, Jack was brought into the Humane Society. severely malnourished and suffering.

These are the biggest problems that stem from listing a pet on Craigslist.  And this is why you are seeing more and more stories in the news about malnourished and neglected pets.  People are adopting these animals, then not taking care of them properly.

If you plan to list a pet online, don’t be afraid to evaluate who is adopting.  Do they have other animals?  More importantly, have they had any previous convictions for animal neglect or other criminal activity.  If so, feel free to let them know that it would not be in the best interest of the pet to let them adopt at the moment.
