Amazon Fire TV: A Streaming and Gaming Set-Top Box for $99

Amazon Fire TV

Everyone’s favorite online retailer has just unveiled the Fire TV, a compact set-top box that can play video games and stream a multitude of content along with many other impressive features.

Engadget reports that the Amazon Fire TV will have the capacity to play games, with titles from the likes of Ubisoft, TellTale Games, Sega, Double Fine Productions and Gameloft already on the way. Amazon has boasted that the Fire TV will have thousands of games in its library by next month, which would include The Walking Dead, Minecraft and Amazon Game Studios’ exclusive title, Sev Zero.

Amazon claims that you will be able to play games on the Fire TV with its controller or through a custom Amazon app, which would let you assume gaming controls through your smartphone or tablet device (we assume that this would be similar in execution to the Xbox SmartGlass app), which would be great for a second player. The Fire TV remote will also have a microphone inside it that you can use to speed up the typing/searching process instead of manually having to type things in letter-by-letter.

This set-top box will include streaming services such as Hulu, YouTube, Netflix, Pandora, iHeartRadio and Amazon Prime (what a surprise). Also, the Fire TV will be able to stream everything you have saved on your Amazon library. Amazon’s Cloud Drive app will allow you to check out pictures taken with your smartphone on the set-top box instantly, regardless of how far your phone might be.

Amazon threw in some light jabs towards the likes of the Roku and Apple TV, saying that performance and speed were always issues with preexisting set-top boxes, at which Amazon flexed its muscles by saying that the Fire TV has a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and its own graphics card. Expect 1080p, Dolby Digital Plus Surround Sound, HDMI and optical-out connectivity when you connect this bad boy up to your big screen.

The Amazon Fire TV is available today for the price of $99. Its controller will cost $39.99 and the average price for a Fire TV game will be just under $2, but free-to-play titles will also be available for the set-top box.
