Last week, the longest winning streak in collegiate sports history came to an end when Trinity College lost a squash match to Yale.  It was a pretty impressive record with 252 consecutive wins dating back to 1998.  That got us thinking about some of the other most impressive streaks that have been broken.

Dan Marino’s Single Season Passing Yards

For nearly 30 years Dolphins legend Dan Marino held the record for most passing yards in a single season with 5,084. It was pretty much untouchable and just one of the many records that Dan Marino had held in the NFL. Drew Brees had an unbelievable season this past year, 2011, and flew past Marino’s record with 5,476 yards. For good measure, Tom Brady also topped the record this year, throwing for 5,235 yards.

UCONN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

It was a 90-game winning streak that spanned three years beginning in 2008 when the UConn Huskies won the national championship.  They would end that season 39-0 and head into the 2009-2010 season undefeated and stay undefeated and get another national title. The Huskies would then go into the 2010-2011 season hoping to keep the streak alive and did long enough to beat the UCLA men’s basketball record of 88.  They got to 90 straight wins before being beat by Stanford in late December 2010, 71-59.

Trinity College Men’s Squash Team

The men’s squash team at Trinity College in Connecticut had held the longest win streak in collegiate sports until it was broken last week by Yale. This streak lasted 13 years and resulted in 252 consecutive wins and 13 national titles. The Trinity men held that win streak for a mind-blowing 5,078 days, but who’s counting?

UCLA Men’s basketball:

In men’s college basketball there is one man whose name is synonymous with winning and that is John Wooden.  The late coach of the UCLA Bruin’s led his team to 88 straight wins. It was only ended in 1974 by Notre Dame, final score 71-70.  That streak would later be broken by the UConn women’s basketball team (see above).

Most Regular Season Wins BY A Coach/QB Combo:

These days, people think of the New England Patriots Tom Brady and Bill Belichick when you say great coach and quarterback combinations. Not too long ago though there was another great combination right in the same division. Dan Marino and Don Shula with the Miami Dolphins. Marino and Shula held the record for most wins as a QB and head coach in the NFL with 116. That mark came tumbling down last November when Brady and Belichick notched victory 117.

Lou Gehrig’s Consecutive Games:

Lou Gehrig was called the Iron Horse for a reason, and that’s because nothing could keep him out of the game. He played 2,130 straight games and held that record until 1995 when Cal Ripken Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles broke it. Ripkin would push that record to 2,632 until his final game in 1998. That record will most likely go untouched.
