Rabies vaccinations are being offered for free in Herkimer County this year.

The shots are mandatory for cats, dogs, and ferrets - even if they are always indoors - three months of age or older in New York State.

Dogs and cats require two rabies vaccinations, each administered one year apart, then another shot every three years thereafter.  Ferrets require a vaccination every year.

Owners are asked to bring proof of the pet's vaccination history in order to receive a three-year certificate, and reminded to bring dogs on a leash, cats in a carrier, and ferrets in a carrier or pillowcase.  Owners must clean up after their pets.

The rabies clinics are for shots only and no examinations will be given.  The clinics are free but a donation of $5.00 is suggested for those who would like to make a donation to help defray costs.
